Carol Harnett had waited ages for an opportunity to take a trip on The Blue Train and at last, her dream came true ... I had to be in Pretoria by 9.00 am ready to board the train for Cape Town, where we were due to arrive 24 hours later. The reception area was a hive of activity, with nationalities from all corners of the globe. We were told the train was full ~ its capacity is 72 passengers without the Observation Car. The train was newly refurbished after a fire had destroyed a few carriages. The train was exactly as I had expected. There really is no better way to travel and the overall experience was utterly relaxing and totally decadent. Taking in the changing scenery in one of the two lounges (one smoking, one non-smoking), sipping champagne before dinner, returning to your bedroom at night to find the bedclothes turned down, soft lighting and chocolates on your pillow ... it really is truly magical. There are two different types of rooms, the standard offering a shower and the deluxe a bath. The rooms were spacious and the beds were very comfortable, with cosy duvets and feather pillows, although they didn't provide hairdryers or slippers. There were also safes and televisions in the room, and the deluxe rooms also offered video and CD players. You are not allowed to smoke in the rooms. The restaurant service was excellent, and the dress code insists that men wear a suit and tie. The food was good, with a choice of three entrees, mains, and desserts, and vegetarians are catered for. The staff were knowledgeable and extremely helpful and friendly. Undoubtedly, taking a trip on The Blue Train is something reserved for special occasions ~ honeymoons, special anniversaries, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. I would highly recommend this trip for train buffs, and whilst the trip is a luxurious treat ~ I would die to take the trip again! ~ in all honesty, I'm reluctant to endorse the 5*+ category, neither can I justify the exorbitant price!
